RESSUN NUORSUOMALAINEN KLUBI

– Economics, Politics, Society –

Our story

Ressun Nuorsuomalainen Klubi traces its origins to the 1920s, when a group of students at Helsingin Suomalainen Reaalilyseo sought to establish a club in order to enrich the economic and political awareness of their peers. On an ordinary morning in February, a group of students gathered and decided on the operations of the club, shared values and the very first board of RNK.

Three founding members sat on the first board: S. A. Sistonen, V. A. Laakso and E. W. Adler. Together they formed the backbone of the club, the same backbone that holds up the core of Young Finnish liberalism in Ressu upper secondary school to this day.

What we do

The core activities of Ressun Nuorsuomalainen Klubi are made up of discussions about current economic, political and societal issues and learning new things together with fellow members. This is achieved through active and diverse activities held within school facilities. The cornerstones of our operations are discussion events open to all members, larger-scale event organizing and visits, as well as cooperation with numerous societal organizations & institutions, and with companies.

DISCUSSION EVENTS

Ressun Nuorsuomalainen Klubi regularly organizes discussion events for its members. The purpose of these events is to bring members together to discuss current topics related to economics, politics, and other areas of society. We also aim to invite professionals and experts in their respective fields to provide insight into these topics and share perspectives that can be listened to, discussed, and constructively challenged.

LARGER EVENTS AND VISITS

In addition to discussion events, the activities of Ressun Nuorsuomalainen Klubi also include visits to governmental institutions as well as domestic and international companies. Our cooperation with the corporate sector is active, and we have visited the headquarters of companies such as UPM-Kymmene, SEB, DLA Piper, Inderes, Kesko, and KONE. The purpose of these visits is to give our members the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and strengthen their understanding of how Finland truly functions.

We also organize larger events for students of our school. Live-streamed panel discussions, guest speakers, study trips, visits, and social gatherings are the club’s contribution to strengthening our school community and improving student well-being.

Ressun Nuorsuomalainen Klubi provides its members with a low-threshold opportunity to internationalize, for example through collaborations, study trips, and visits. The club places a particular emphasis on EU affairs.

As evidence of this focus, the club has organized study trips to cities such as Brussels and Tallinn, in addition to organizing a European Parliament election panel in cooperation with the City of Helsinki, the European Parliament, and the European Commission. The panel was held at Paasitorni, and it gathered around 500 upper secondary school students from the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Tatu Leppänen,
President of the Supreme Court of Finland, OTT

It was great to be given the opportunity to discuss with students a part of Ressun Nuorsuomalainen Klubi. Their questions showed that young people actively follow the significance of the rule of law and law in society. Good luck with your future activity!

Jyrki Katainen

Former Prime Minister, EU-commisioner and President of Sitra, YTM

It was great to be invited to the Club to discuss the future of Finland and Sitra. It is amazing that students have founded this kind of discussion forum for open dialogue on societal matters. Thank you for the great questions and insights!

Vesa Puttonen

Professor of Finance at Aalto University, KTT

“It was a pleasure to be invited. The students’ questions showed me that the world’s key economic news is closely followed at Ressu. The partially critical questions showed me that decision-makers should listen to young people.”

Testimonials have been provided only in Finnish – English translation only for general presentation purposes!
